Prague Ruzyne Renamed Vaclav Havel Airport Prague

The international airport in the Czech capital (formerly known as Prague Ruzyne Airport) has been renamed in honour of the late President Vaclav Havel. The airport will now be known as Vaclav Havel Airport Prague

More than 82,000 Czechs signed a petition demanding the change, which was approved by the government.

Vaclav Havel was the dissident playwright who led the 1989 revolution that toppled four decades of communist rule before becoming the country’s president.

The name change took place on the 76th anniversary of Havel’s Birthday. Havel’s widow, Dagmar, was present Friday at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Work commences on extension to JFK Airport’s Terminal 5

New York’s neighbourhood airline JetBlue have embarked on the extension to its world class home at John F. Kennedy Airport’s Terminal 5 to open the way for a new international arrivals facility.

Set to open in early 2015, the carefully designed space will include 6 international arrivals gates. Three will be new and three will be converted from Terminal 5. The facility will include an International Arrivals Hall with full US Custom and Federal Inspection Services to deliver a seamless travel experience for travellers arriving on international flights with JetBlue and selected partner airlines.

JetBlue’s resident and chief executive Dave Barger along with the airline’s executives and crew members joined Homeland Security chairman Peter King; Queens Borough president Helen Marshall; City Council member Jimmy Van Bramer; US Custom and Border Protection JFK port director Susan Mitchell; Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s aviation director Susan Baer; and representatives from the JFK airport to make the announcement.

“Today is truly a ground breaking day for JetBlue as we begin work on our international arrivals terminal at T5,” Barger.

“We are excited to work with all of our partners at JFK and beyond to move forward with this project which, when completed, will make all domestic and international operations seamless and convenient for our customers and consolidate our flight operations under one roof.”

JetBlue is the biggest domestic airline at JFK, operating more than 150 non-stop flights daily to 56 destinations throughout the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America.

The customer service friendly airline carried more than 2 million travellers from the airport last year to its many international destinations including Barbados; Costa Rica; Dominican Republic; Jamaica; Mexico; Saint Lucia; St. Maarten; and Turks and Caicos – all of which will soon enjoy the seamless experience of arriving into the new international arrivals terminal extension.

Record month at Birmingham International Airport

Birmingham airport claims to have beaten all other UK airports in terms of passenger growth during the month of August. Passenger numbers increased in excess of 9% to more than 1 million in the peak summer month

“The growth in passenger numbers for the month was higher than at any other UK airport during the same period,” the airport said.

August was the 4th most popular month in the airport’s history and the 9th time the airport has passed the 1 million passenger level.

Chief executive Paul Kehoe said: “August has been a fantastic month for us in terms of passenger numbers. It is particularly pleasing to learn we were the best performing airport in the UK, clearly demonstrating there is strong demand to fly from Birmingham.

“We have seen encouraging signs particularly from our leisure passengers, who have decided to take advantage of the extra capacity and new routes now served by Monarch, including Barcelona and Nice.

“Traditional summer sun destinations including Palma, Alicante and Malaga also proved to be tremendously popular in August.”

He added: “We are now turning our attention to the winter season ahead, making sure we continue the great results we have achieved this summer.

“With new routes planned to commence in the coming months, including the launch of EasyJet’s daily service to Belfast International, SAS launching their new route to Stockholm and Ryanair now serving Milan and Krakow, this is great news for our business community and those seeking city breaks.”

Enterprise Rent A Car expands home working pilot

Car hire company Enterprise rent-a-car is expanding its home-working pilot programme after experiencing significant positive results after only a few months.  Enterprise launched the pilot to establish whether home-working was a viable approach to growing its call centre, based in Aldershot. During the pilot, call centre employees from the Enterprise Business Support (EBS) facility were given the opportunity to work from home and were set up with all the technical support to make this a success. EBS is primarily responsible for handling telephone reservations and due to the growth of the business and the premises were almost at capacity.

Enterprise then compared the cost of setting up an employee to work from home against the cost of having an office-based employee. The comparison showed the cost of an office-based employee is around £5000 per year whilst the cost of a home-based employee is only £1500 in the first year for set-up costs and is then almost minimal in subsequent years.

This immediate 70 per cent cost-saving, combined with several other very compelling benefits which the company has seen from the programme, has demonstrated that home-working is a very successful business approach.

Some of the other benefits of the home-working pilot have included improved retention, reduction in absenteeism and disciplinary issues, higher employee satisfaction and a more diverse work force – helping the company to fulfill its wider commitment to creating a fully inclusive and diverse work place.  The retention level for EBS home-based employees is 80 per cent, almost 20 per cent higher than the national average for call centres. In addition, the home working programme has made it easier for Enterprise to provide out of hours call centre assistance, improving the customer experience.

As a result, Enterprise will be expanding the programme as demand for call centre employees increases moving forwards, with a view to achieving a target of 50 per cent of EBS employees becoming home-workers over time.

Leigh Lafever-Ayer, HR Director UK and Ireland at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, said, “Most of our UK employees are branch based and need to be on the branch floor to look after customers. So we’ve focused our home working opportunities on back office functions. We’ve proved employees can be as effective working from home and this approach can help control cost. It’s evidence that flexible working can be a very successful business strategy.

“We’ve also found that we’ve been able to recruit a more diverse work force to our call centre because we can offer greater flexibility. The home-working pilot has attracted a completely wide group of candidates from working mothers to retired company directors, people who want to work and be part of an ambitious business, but need the flexibility of working from home.”

Katy Harding is one of the home-based Customer Service Specialists at Enterprise Rent-A-Car and lives in Farnham, Surrey.

She says: “Since becoming a home worker, I have definitely seen my work-life balance improve for the better. I find I have much more time for my family and friends, which is ironic as I actually now work more hours per week than when I was office-based.Compare Car Hire with Car Hire Assistant

“Although occasionally I miss the friendly faces, I find I am much more productive at home, plus it’s nice to not have to fight for the parking space, or, wait for the over-crowded bus to get home.”
