Dubai International sets new passenger number record

Dubai International has started 2013 in top gear, setting yet a further monthly record by welcoming, for the first time, in excess of 5.5 million passengers in one month.

Based on traffic reports issued by Dubai Airports, passenger numbers went up 14.6 per cent to 5,559,760 in January 2013, up from 4,852,139 in the same month in 2012. The majority of markets were boosted in January by holiday traffic as well as visitors to the Dubai Shopping Festival.

Air links continue to be extended between Dubai and Saudi Arabia with Emirates, flydubai, Nasair and Saudi Arabian Airlines all adding new flights in 2012. During the year Emirates added new flights to Jeddah, Dammam and Riyadh whilst flydubai broadened its network to encompass Jeddah, Dammam, Riyadh, Taif, Yanbu and Tabuk.

Saudi Arabian Airlines, in the meantime, added flights from Medina and Riyadh to Dubai and low-cost airline Nasair launched flighta between Riyadh and Dubai.

“January’s record passenger numbers confirm that the growth trajectory recorded last year has continued into 2013 and Dubai Airports has taken another steady stride towards the 98 million passengers a year we expect to pass through our airport by the end of the decade,” said chief executive Paul Griffiths.

Emirates adds two weekly flights to Seychelles

In a move to support the tourism sector of the Seychelles, Emirates, one of the fastest-growing airlines in the world, will introduce two additional flights to the archipelago in December and February, thus increasing the service to thirteen weekly flights.

The airline, known to have contributed to the development of new tourism markets for the Seychelles, will enhance its promotional efforts across its network to sustain the awareness around the idyllic destination.

“As a partner of the Seychelles, we actively support the tourism industry of the archipelago. The increase in frequencies will provide even more travel options and flexibility to visitors from across our network,” said Ahmed Hashim Khoory, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, West Asia and Indian Ocean.

“Working with the Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and the Seychelles Tourism Board has been very fruitful. We thank the government of the Republic of Seychelles for their trust in Emirates,” he added.

On his part, Alain St. Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said: “We welcome the confirmation by Emirates for its 13th weekly flight linking Seychelles to the world. This is an added boost for our tourism industry, because it helps to reconfirm that we are, more than ever before, but one stop from anywhere in the world traveling in First Class, in Business Class, or in Economy from start to finish. The continued support by Emirates to our tourism marketing drive, we hope, will be reinforced with these extra flights for the benefit of Seychelles and the airline itself.”

The 12th flight starts on December 3. EK707 will depart Dubai at 0845 hours, arriving in Seychelles at 1325 hours. The return journey from Seychelles, EK708, will depart at 2350 hours, arriving in Dubai at 0420 hours, the following day. The 13th flight will be operational from February 5, 2013.

From the start of its operations to Seychelles in January 2005, Emirates has promoted the island destination throughout its network. Every year, Emirates Holidays’ brochure – A World of Choice – dedicates a prominent part to the destination.

Qantas has announces a new global aviation partnership with Emirates

Australian flag-carrier Qantas has announced a new global aviation partnership with Emirates designed to give customers a seamless Australian and international network.

Under the agreement, signed this morning by Emirates president Tim Clark and Qantas Group chief executive Alan Joyce, Qantas will move its hub for European flights to Dubai and enter an extensive commercial relationship with Emirates.

The ten-year partnership will go beyond code-sharing and includes integrated network collaboration with coordinated pricing, sales and scheduling as well as a benefit-sharing model. Neither airline will take equity in the other.

Qantas will launch daily A380 services from both Sydney and Melbourne to London via Dubai, meaning that together Emirates and Qantas will offer 98 weekly services between Australia and Dubai.

Qantas will be the only other airline operating to Terminal 3 and the new purpose built A380 concourse at Dubai International Airport.

Joyce said the partnership would deliver unprecedented benefits to Qantas customers and mark a decisive step forward in strategy.

“Emirates is the ideal partner for Qantas,” Joyce said.

“It has a wonderful brand, a modern fleet, an uncompromising approach to quality and it flies to the A-list of international destinations.

“This is the most significant partnership the Qantas Group has ever formed with another airline, moving past the traditional alliance model to a new level. It will deliver benefits to all parts of the group.

Emirates and Qantas frequent flyer programs will be aligned, giving customers expanded opportunities to earn and redeem points.

“The time was right to develop a long-term partnership with Qantas, the iconic Australian airline,” said Clark.

“Since our first flights began in 1996, Australia has long been a popular destination for Emirates leisure and business travellers, making it one of the top three destinations in our network.

“By establishing this partnership we are providing our passengers with additional connectivity in Australia and the region, the ability to utilise reciprocal frequent flyer benefits and access to premium lounges and travel experiences.”
