Work commences on extension to JFK Airport’s Terminal 5

New York’s neighbourhood airline JetBlue have embarked on the extension to its world class home at John F. Kennedy Airport’s Terminal 5 to open the way for a new international arrivals facility.

Set to open in early 2015, the carefully designed space will include 6 international arrivals gates. Three will be new and three will be converted from Terminal 5. The facility will include an International Arrivals Hall with full US Custom and Federal Inspection Services to deliver a seamless travel experience for travellers arriving on international flights with JetBlue and selected partner airlines.

JetBlue’s resident and chief executive Dave Barger along with the airline’s executives and crew members joined Homeland Security chairman Peter King; Queens Borough president Helen Marshall; City Council member Jimmy Van Bramer; US Custom and Border Protection JFK port director Susan Mitchell; Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s aviation director Susan Baer; and representatives from the JFK airport to make the announcement.

“Today is truly a ground breaking day for JetBlue as we begin work on our international arrivals terminal at T5,” Barger.

“We are excited to work with all of our partners at JFK and beyond to move forward with this project which, when completed, will make all domestic and international operations seamless and convenient for our customers and consolidate our flight operations under one roof.”

JetBlue is the biggest domestic airline at JFK, operating more than 150 non-stop flights daily to 56 destinations throughout the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America.

The customer service friendly airline carried more than 2 million travellers from the airport last year to its many international destinations including Barbados; Costa Rica; Dominican Republic; Jamaica; Mexico; Saint Lucia; St. Maarten; and Turks and Caicos – all of which will soon enjoy the seamless experience of arriving into the new international arrivals terminal extension.

Record month at Birmingham International Airport

Birmingham airport claims to have beaten all other UK airports in terms of passenger growth during the month of August. Passenger numbers increased in excess of 9% to more than 1 million in the peak summer month

“The growth in passenger numbers for the month was higher than at any other UK airport during the same period,” the airport said.

August was the 4th most popular month in the airport’s history and the 9th time the airport has passed the 1 million passenger level.

Chief executive Paul Kehoe said: “August has been a fantastic month for us in terms of passenger numbers. It is particularly pleasing to learn we were the best performing airport in the UK, clearly demonstrating there is strong demand to fly from Birmingham.

“We have seen encouraging signs particularly from our leisure passengers, who have decided to take advantage of the extra capacity and new routes now served by Monarch, including Barcelona and Nice.

“Traditional summer sun destinations including Palma, Alicante and Malaga also proved to be tremendously popular in August.”

He added: “We are now turning our attention to the winter season ahead, making sure we continue the great results we have achieved this summer.

“With new routes planned to commence in the coming months, including the launch of EasyJet’s daily service to Belfast International, SAS launching their new route to Stockholm and Ryanair now serving Milan and Krakow, this is great news for our business community and those seeking city breaks.”

Air Asia introduce child free zones on flights

Malaysia based low-cost carrier Air Asia has outlined plans to introduce a quiet zone on its aircraft, effectively banning children from the first seven rows of economy class seats.

The airline hopes to get the scheme up and running by February next year, with passengers able to reserve a seat in the zone at no extra cost – for now.

On an airbus A330, the seats will make up seven rows of seating behind the Premium FlatBed class.

AirAsia argues passengers will experience minimal noise in the seats and soft lighting.

Any group containing a passenger younger than 12 will not be able to book these seats.
