UK drivers need an International Drivers Permit in Florida

02 Mar

Confusion reigns over a change in legislation in Florida requiring all drivers to possess an International Drivers Permit. Whilst the legislation was initially passed to deal with the influx of travellers with non-English licenses, the legislation drafted includes all drivers, including those with an English licence such as those with Irish, British, South African and Australian licenses.

Whilst the DHSMV has indicated that it will defer enforcement, the fact remains that all non-US drivers are still required to carry an IDP and, there is some confusion as to whether a driver not in possession of an IDP will be insured in the event of an accident.

Even some car hire companies are reported to be unsure or unaware of the new legislation. Whilst others are simply refusing to hire cars to travellers without an IDP.
